Summary

The fourth issue of the Bulletin of the Slovak Speleological Society (SSS) is in fact the fifth in the year 2013, as before that, except of the three regular issues in Slovak language with English summaries, a special issue all written in English was published for the 16th International Congress of Speleology in Brno. For the people from abroad interested in getting the Bulletin, it is possible to obtain it at the secretariat of the Slovak Speleological Society in Liptovský Mikuláš and you can also order it on email address: speleo@ssj.sk.

This issue of the SSS Bulletin brings many interesting articles mostly about the activities of Slovak, but also Czech cavers in Slovakia and abroad. The Bulletin begins, as usual, with contributions from the sphere of research and exploration of karst on the territory of Slovakia. Vlastislav Káňa and Martina Roblíčková, authors from Moravské zemské muzeum v Brně (The Moravian Country Museum in Brno) deal with the paleontological research in one of the caves in The Strážov Mts. in the introductory part of the issue. (More datails about the research can be found in the Abstract after this Summary) An article that is aimed at the research of an important cave, The Kryštálová Cave in the Low Fatra Mts., written by the authors from Košice follows. The research there focuses on the presence of crystals of calcite, especially at detection of its genesis with the help of analysys of radioisotopes and comparing the results with other karst forms created by geo- and hydrothermal processes. The history of exploration of this cave and its description, as well as the opinions on its genesis are noted in the following article written by J. Dubravay and O. Štefko from caving club in Terchová. I. Pap informs about the newest results of the still ongoing research of one of the biggest Slovak caves – The Mesačný Tieň Cave (The Moon Shadow Cave) in the High Tatra Mts.

Altogether six articles refer to foreign activities of cavers. Two of them deal with the topic of speleodiving: excellent results were achieved also in 2013 by Slovak and Czech divers on expeditions in Macedonia (cave spring Babuna) and on Sardinia, where they were able to join Bue Marino and Su Molente Caves. Three of the participants of these expeditions inform about them: K. Kýška, D. Hutňan a M. Plankenbuchler. The maps of these cave systems are included.
L. Vlček writes about his experiences and acquired knowledge from the stay in a little Italian town Casola Valsenio and its surroundings, where he together with other Slovak cavers represented Slovakia at The National Congress of the Italian Speleological Society and at the session of the General Assembly of European Speleological Federation in November 2013. Š. Kyšela, who was a member of Westminster Speleological Group in England between October 2012 and September 2013 talks about his caving activities on the British Isles. The karst of Wulong Territory in south-western China is described by A. Petrvalská and G. Koltai, who participated there in an international course aimed at research and hydrogeochemistry of karst, which was organised under the auspices of UNESCO. The contribution of Z. Hochmuth is dedicated to the visit of an ancient tunnel on
Greek island Samos. In the News section, there is a text about the other course of The Speleological School of the SSS on Krakova Hoľa Mt. in the Low Tatras, an article about the exhibition of Archaeological Museum in Bratislava devoted to the Deravá Skala Cave near Plavecký Mikuláš in the Little Carpathians and information about the prepared events of the SSS, eg. the General Assembly and International Speleomeeting, which will take place in April 2014 in Svit, a town under the Tatras. The section about speleological literature presents the review of an important work by Slovak cavers, speleologists and natural scientists Venezuelan Tepuys: Their Caves and Biota (2012), a remarkable book written by the SSS member Milan Štéc about the Cave of Dead Bats in the Low Tatra Mts. (the author was instrumental in opening the cave to the public) and also informs about the publication of the above mentioned “Congress Bulletin of The Slovak Speleological Society. After the historical description of an expedition into Kozia Cave in the Low Tatras and samples from musical and literary production of Slovak cavers follows the acknowledgement from the Australian cavers, participants of the International Congress in Brno to the organisers of post-congress excursions in Slovakia. The Bulletin of the SSS is closed by Social News with the overview of our jubilees in 2014 and information about the death of professor Hubert Trimmel, the honorary president of UIS.
