SUMMARY

The first issue of the 45th year of the Bulletin of the Slovak Speleological Society begins solemnly – with a speech of the chairman of the Slovak Speleological Society (SSS) Bohuslav Kortman commemorating the 70th anniversary of organised caving in Slovakia and a facsimile of the article in Krásy Slovenska magazine (Beauties of Slovakia) from 1945 about establishing the Caving Corps Of the Club of Slovak Mountaineers and Skiers (April 15, 1944).
The bulletin continues with the summarising report on activities of the Slovak Speleological Society since 2010 until 2013. After the introductory report of the chairman of the SSS about the activity of the organisation, conducted events and results achieved in various areas of its operation in Slovakia and abroad follow the reports of individual caving clubs, the overview of the indicators of their activity, the outline of the economy of the SSS in 2013 and the draft budget for 2014. The introductory part of the bulletin is closed by up-to-date charts of the longest and deepest caves and chasms in the Slovak Republic, which were compiled by J. Tencer.
The following four contributions inform about several newest results of speleological research, exploration and documentation of caves in Slovakia; there are already 7,000 known caves in the country. F. Radinger writes about the results of speleological research of the hill under the Divín Castle. J. Szunyog in the third article describes exploratory methods in the Prosiecka Cave in the Choč Mts., which became the longest in the whole mountain range last year. He discovered a new cave there. Vrátna Valley in the Malá Fatra Mts. belongs among the most beautiful valleys in Slovakia. However, local caves are less known. The description and maps of two of them – the Medvedia (Bear) Cave I and II – are contained in the article of P. Cvacho. Digging works in the exploratory excavation in the locality with the name Masné fleky (Greasy Spots) in Plavecký Karst in the Little Carpathians Mts. are described by B. Šmída and M. Hačo.
Three articles are aimed at the activities of Slovak cavers abroad. The target of their expeditions for many years has been Kosovo and its karst and caves. Last year, they also visited the Radavc Cave, where they built on the work of cavers from Wales, who operated there the year before. Our cavers measured and documented 600 m of new cave corridors in this cave. M. Olšavský, one of the participants in an international expedition of speleologists from Croatia and other five European countries in Velebit Mts., deals with the conduct of the expedition. During their stay in Romania, members of the club Speleo Rožňava visited several caves in the Carpathians with resident cavers from the club Speo Sugo and also went in for canyoning. Their experiences are described by M. Repaszký.
After the article of J. Haráni about a regional caving magazine – yearly Jaskyniar (Caver), published by Speleo Turiec, one of the clubs of the SSS, follow the Social News and the bulletin is closed by Attractions (Slovak caves in the World Natural Heritage of the UNESCO on Google, a competition in rope climbing using the SRT in Košice and the victory of cavers from the club Speleo Turiec in a TV game show).
